Tours are limited to private groups of up to 6 guests maximum, ensuring a personalized experience with plenty of room and the best views for everyone.
We operate a comfortable 26-foot welded aluminum boat with a heated cabin, large windows, comfortable seating, and ample space for both sightseeing and gear storage. The vessel is powered by a 250 horsepower outboard for safe and efficient travel.
Humpback whales come to Frederick Sound to feed during the summer months (July and August) before heading south to warmer waters in winter. It's not uncommon to see 20 to 30 whales on a given day during peak season.
We're based in Petersburg, Alaska, in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. LeConte Glacier is approximately 18 miles from Petersburg, while whale watching tours typically travel 50 miles or more through Frederick Sound.
No experience is necessary! Captain Kelly personally leads each tour and shares extensive natural history knowledge throughout the trip. The boat is equipped with a complete library of guidebooks, and guests are encouraged to ask questions.
The marine waters along the Inside Passage are generally not rough, and we've never had a guest encounter motion sickness. While we do keep ginger tea onboard "just in case," we highly recommend you not take Dramamine before your trip!
Depending on the tour, you may encounter humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, bald eagles, various seabirds, and along shorelines: bears, moose, deer, and wolves. Depending on the ice conditions, we sometimes observe harbor seal pupping in LeConte Glacier Fjord in May or June.
Yes! We specialize in photography tours and custom charters for professional photographers and film crews. Captain Kelly is an award-winning wildlife cinematographer with expertise in helping capture the perfect shot, and we never rush—spending as much time as needed for that perfectly composed image.
• Dress in warm, waterproof layers as Alaska weather can be unpredictable and we are located within a rainforest. A tour to LeConte Glacier usually warrants warm jackets, hats and gloves as the wind blowing straight off the ice can be chilly.
The boat has a heated cabin for comfort so you'll have a warm, dry place to duck out of the wind and rain.
• Bring cameras, binoculars, chargers, and any personal items you might need.
Additional binoculars and USB charging are available onboard. Natural history guidebooks are also available onboard.
• Packing a lunch and your favorite snacks or drinks is recommended.
We provide warm drinks and simple snacks (like protein bars and granola bars).
Absolutely! We love creating custom adventures tailored to your interests. We can transport you and your gear (including camping gear, kayaks, bicycles, and paddleboards) to various scenic locations around Petersburg and the Frederick Sound area.
Our trips are truly intimate as they are all private tours with a maximum of 6 guests, personally led by Captain Kelly who has an academic background in Wildlife Biology and years of local experience. As the Director of the Petersburg Marine Mammal Center and an award-winning wildlife filmmaker, she brings unmatched expertise. You'll never fight for a view, and she takes pride in sharing the natural history of this incredible ecosystem.
We generally operate springtime through early fall, weather and tide dependent.
